About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Review and prepare fitness to practise cases for NMC practice committees
- Prepare applications to be heard in the High Court
- Present hearings regularly before the NMC’s practice committees
- Handle hearings ranging from straightforward to complex, virtually and at hearing centres in London and Edinburgh
- Appear in the County Court and High Court or Court of Session when holding relevant rights of audience
- Provide high-quality, person-centred adjudication outcomes for registrants referred to the NMC
- Provide accurate legal advice and quality-assure work with minimal supervision
- Work collaboratively with internal teams
- Move between teams as the flow of work dictates
Requirements
What you’ll need- Holder of a UK Practising Certificate as UK Qualified Solicitor or Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive
- Experience of advocacy
- Proven experience providing consistently accurate and appropriate legal advice while meeting tight deadlines
- Experience of autonomous decision making while dealing with high profile, sensitive issues
- Excellent oral, written and presentation skills
- Collaborative working with other internal teams
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to work on different matters and cases simultaneously
- Good IT skills
- Person-centred approach, including respect for all, listening and sensitively managing individuals with additional needs
- Strong commitment to and understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion
- High level of personal integrity, professionalism and confidentiality
- Ability to attend one of the NMC offices two days per week
- Subject to pre-employment checks; DBS and further vetting checks may apply in future
- Ability to review and work with sensitive and distressing fitness to practise material
