About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Assist with data collection for a research project investigating how native seed-dispersing animals support post-fire oak woodland restoration in southern California
- Capture, band, and measure wild jays using baited drop traps
- Resight and make behavioral observations of color-banded birds
- Assist with setup and data collection for seed provisioning experiments
- Perform data entry and similar routine tasks
- Work primarily at The Nature Conservancy’s Dangermond Preserve along the coast of southern California
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's Degree in a biological sciences field or equivalent experience required
- 4 years of relevant experience with High School diploma or GED, 2 years of relevant experience with Associate's Degree, or 0 years of relevant experience with Bachelor's Degree
- 3 months of experience collecting ornithological field data (desired)
- Graduate-level training in ecology or related field (desired)
- Proficiency in capturing and banding passerines (desired)
- Good color vision required for resighting color bands
- Ability to work alone and hike long distances in hot, rugged, and steep terrain
- Able to live in a remote and communal setting
- Valid U.S. driver's license
- Successful completion of a background check; a drug screen or physical may be required
