About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide legal advice and strategic support for the Department of Public Safety and the Student Conduct Office
  • Advise on civil rights matters, criminal and public safety issues, student discipline, significant investigations, and crisis incident response
  • Provide legal advice and guidance on Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Police and Campus Crime Statistics Act compliance
  • Serve as legal liaison to senior leaders and university stakeholders
  • Advise on significant policy development, policy application, and legislative and regulatory developments
  • Negotiate and implement university policy development with internal business units and concessionaires
  • Advise university leadership on legal obligations and policy during emergencies and crisis-management situations
  • Identify and address issues, build consensus, and achieve resolution for complex university safety legal matters
  • Serve as legal liaison to local, state and federal law enforcement agencies regarding subpoenas, investigations, and search warrants
  • Participate in or lead special projects assigned by the Associate Vice President and Senior Associate General Counsel

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • J.D.
  • Graduated from an accredited law school
  • Member of the Ohio bar or eligible to practice law in the State of Ohio within one year or less
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of legal practice
  • Significant previous legal experience with public safety and/or law enforcement
  • Approval of the Ohio Attorney General's office prior to appointment
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Ohio State will not sponsor applicants for work visas for this position
  • Previous experience with public entities, particularly public universities, public law issues, student disciplinary matters and/or white-collar criminal matters is desired
