About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead Tonal's Experiences team responsible for member happiness and incremental improvements and new features for existing subscribers
  • Lead a team of six engineers directly
  • Set direction, run performance reviews, coach directly, and provide timely feedback
  • Own delivery of the member experience roadmap with Product, Design, Data Science, and Content
  • Ensure predictable delivery and high-quality releases
  • Drive technical quality across reliability, performance, test coverage, and release health
  • Balance technical debt investment against shipping speed
  • Partner with other teams to obtain fast feedback and reduce coordination overhead
  • Hire and grow the team
  • Define expectations by level, run fair and calibrated hiring loops, and build a bench of engineers who can lead
  • Critically review design documents and risky changes and understand engineering tradeoffs

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Managed software engineers directly for several years, including hiring, performance management, and technical growth
  • Shipped consumer-facing product experiences on mobile, embedded devices, or web
  • Strong engineering background with depth in at least one area
  • Able to read and reason about code and architecture
  • Clear communication with Product, Design, Data Science, and executives
  • Able to hold direct, respectful conversations with underperforming employees
  • Uses AI-assisted engineering tools and evaluates their output
  • Experience with Android, Kotlin, Flutter, Swift, or software shipped alongside a physical product is extra credit
  • Experience leading platform or release-process modernization is extra credit
  • Background in connected fitness, consumer hardware, or digital health is extra credit
  • Experience managing distributed or contract engineers is extra credit
  • Legally authorized to work in the US and/or Canada
