About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform research and publish in relevant venues, including NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CLeaR, UAI, COLM, ACL, EMNLP, or TMLR
  • Take ownership of the project from inception and ideation through validation of developed methods
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with machine learning, behavioral, and social scientists
  • Research and develop generative AI technology for understanding human behavior
  • Study causal reasoning in language-based generative machine learning models
  • Develop methods for testing and improving causal reasoning
  • Engage in strategy discussions connecting research to business impact at Toyota

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Ph.D. student in AI/ML, computer science, data science, statistics, or a related field
  • Publication record or demonstrated research experience in causal inference, including structural causal models, identification, and counterfactual reasoning
  • Hands-on experience with LLM evaluation and benchmarking, mechanistic interpretability, or methods for improving LLM reasoning
  • Experience with prompting and prompt optimization, post-training, supervised fine-tuning, reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards, pretraining, or architectural changes
  • Experience with Python programming and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch
  • Interest in human-centered research, including behavioral science and computational social science
  • Experience with qualitative and/or quantitative methods such as experiments and user studies
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Google Scholar link and full publication list included with CV
