About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own state and local advocacy strategy across approximately 20 states in the Midwestern and Southern U.S.
  • Develop and refine USGBC and LEED advocacy strategies for state and local levels
  • Lead implementation of approved strategies and priority projects
  • Track, analyze, and respond to green building policy developments in legislatures, agencies, and local governments
  • Represent USGBC in advocacy coalitions, policy roundtables, and strategic forums
  • Build and maintain networks of state and local policymakers and USGBC allies
  • Educate elected officials and agency staff through meetings, briefings, events, and lobbying efforts
  • Facilitate government officials’ participation in USGBC events, including LEED tours and plaque ceremonies
  • Develop subject matter expertise and contribute to policy briefs and articles
  • Collaborate with internal teams and contracted consultants to monitor and respond to threats and opportunities
  • Coordinate policy-related content with the Communications Director
  • Serve as a local spokesperson and support public relations activities and events
  • Support federal policy activities in assigned states as requested
  • Report to the State & Local Advocacy Associate Director and collaborate cross-functionally with Communications, Market Transformation and Development, community leaders, and members

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 4 to 7 years of experience managing state or local advocacy or policy
  • Experience communicating about public policy issues preferred
  • Experience across multiple jurisdictions preferred
  • Experience with nonprofit or government entities preferred
  • Federal government or policy experience may be considered relevant to meet experience requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Preferred fields of study: Public Policy, Political Science, Environmental Science, Energy, Engineering Technology/System(s)
  • Microsoft Suite proficiency
  • Experience with legislative tracking platforms is a plus but not required
  • Policy monitoring, research, and analysis skills
  • Advocacy campaign planning and implementation skills
  • Relationship-building and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including public speaking
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-through
  • Strategic thinking, entrepreneurial, proactive, and adaptable mindset
  • LEED Green Associate or LEED AP preferred, or willingness to obtain LEED GA within 12 months
  • Ability to work Monday–Friday, 9 AM–5:30 PM in the Central or Eastern time zone
  • Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours during travel
