About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Partner with clients to clarify challenges, assess whether AI is appropriate, and evaluate feasibility and risks
- Design, prototype, build, and ship AI-powered applications, workflows, and agents
- Architect agentic systems with context management, memory, orchestration, tools, skills, and MCP integrations
- Select, integrate, adapt, and fine-tune foundation models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and others
- Design architectures and user experiences around model limitations
- Apply retrieval, chunking, embeddings, and redlining techniques; debug AI systems
- Build evaluation and observability into shipped systems
- Use stochastic test cases, trace-based analysis, and benchmarking tools to monitor models, prompts, and agents
- Build software, data pipelines, and cloud infrastructure in Azure, GCP, or AWS
- Own parts of project delivery and lead client and internal workshops
- Join pitches as an AI expert and shape proposals and RFP responses
- Help define Umain’s AI offerings through frameworks, playbooks, knowledge sessions, and engineering standards
Requirements
What you’ll need- Approximately 8 years engineering experience, including at least 4 years building AI-powered systems, or equivalent hands-on experience shipping AI in production systems
- Hands-on experience with LLMs, embeddings, vector databases, prompt and context engineering, retrieval setups, fine-tuning, and model evaluation
- Experience building agents with memory, tool use, orchestration, and at least one modern agent framework
- Experience integrating OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, and Meta models
- Strong software engineering skills in TypeScript and/or Python, including backend systems and data pipelines
- Frontend or backend experience outside the traditional AI field and ability to build end to end
- Proven experience deploying and running scalable applications in Azure, GCP, or AWS
- Experience with Docker, CI/CD, and modern DevOps practices
- Track record of delivering AI solutions in production
- Pragmatic judgment about when AI is appropriate
- Ability to turn vague questions into concrete technical solutions
- Strong communication skills and comfort working in multidisciplinary teams
- Curiosity about emerging AI capabilities and enthusiasm for exploring new approaches
- Experience with machine learning, computer vision, generative images, and/or multimodal models (nice-to-have)
- Experience in consultancy or client-facing environments (nice-to-have)
- Must be in Chicago or willing to relocate
- Minimum 3 days in-office per week
