About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead technology and AI conversations with senior client stakeholders as a CTO-level counterpart
- Track developments across GenAI, agents, machine learning, computer vision, on-device AI, and physical AI
- Translate AI developments into client advice and company direction
- Set technical vision and architecture standards across AI work
- Guide and mentor AI engineers
- Make architectural choices and resolve complex technical problems
- Prototype new capabilities when needed
- Assess feasibility and risks involving data security, privacy, licensing, regulation, and responsible use
- Oversee delivery from ideation through production
- Keep teams focused, clear bottlenecks, and identify delivery risks
- Join pitches, shape proposals, and define scope and budgets
- Help build the North American AI engineering team
- Collaborate with teams in Europe
- Represent Umain’s AI work with U.S. clients and the wider industry
Requirements
What you’ll need- 10+ years of engineering experience
- At least 3 years of hands-on AI experience
- Several years in consulting or agency environments
- Direct client experience on complex, multi-team engagements
- Experience shaping and pricing proposals and scoping work as the technical authority
- Perspective on AI direction and track record turning emerging opportunities into action
- Experience building and shipping products or offerings
- Track record architecting and overseeing complex AI solutions in production
- Hands-on experience with LLMs, embeddings, vector databases, retrieval, agents, fine-tuning, evaluation, and major model providers
- Experience beyond GenAI, including classic machine learning, computer vision, multimodal models, forecasting, or recommendation systems
- Strong Python and/or TypeScript engineering skills, including backend systems and data pipelines
- Experience deploying applications on AWS, Azure, or GCP
- DevOps experience with containers, CI/CD, and monitoring
- Ability to lead senior executive conversations and explain complex concepts clearly
- Ability to turn vague client questions into concrete plans
- Sound judgment regarding appropriate AI use
- Curiosity about new capabilities and hands-on experimentation
- Must be in Chicago or willing to relocate
- Minimum 3 days in-office per week
- Nice-to-have: experience with large consumer brands, edge or on-device AI, robotics, physical AI, or building a team/practice in a new market
