About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform laboratory tests and report data used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients
- Perform Hematology II testing, including coagulation, urinalysis, rapid strep, Sofia flu, Strep. Pneumoniae, Legionella Ag, wet prep, qualitative HCG and occult blood testing
- Perform Chemistry I testing using AU680, AU480 and Access2 instruments
- Perform Chemistry II testing using the Triage meter; create manifests and site batches for send-out testing
- Correlate test results and take appropriate follow-up action for questionable results
- Process specimens according to the Specimen Collection manual
- Operate and maintain laboratory instrumentation
- Complete maintenance, temperature and other required logs
- Perform shift start-up procedures
- Conduct quality control, calibrations and instrument checks
- Maintain equipment, supplies, reagents and inventory using FIFO practices
- Perform testing and work assignments meeting turnaround times and deadlines
- Follow Hematology, Chemistry and Blood Bank protocols, including complex testing and preparation of component blood products for transfusion
- Provide guidance and consultation to lower-level technologists and technicians regarding complex test results and Blood Bank procedures
- Process blood donor specimens for outside shipment and testing
- Send specimens and blood products between campuses and sites using appropriate packaging and transport methods
- Rotate to the Marlboro Campus Lab-Medical Center
- Troubleshoot testing process discrepancies
- Travel between Marlborough and Nashoba/Groton to provide operational, administrative or departmental support
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree or successful completion of an accredited four-year school of Medical Technology
- Three years of related experience
- Must qualify as a General Supervisor under CLIA regulations for high-complexity testing under 42 CFR 493.1461
- For the bachelor’s-degree pathway: 1 year of laboratory training or experience in high-complexity testing
- Alternative pathway: associate degree in laboratory science or MLT from an accredited institution, with at least 2 years of laboratory training/experience in high-complexity testing
- Performs low, moderate and/or high complexity testing as required
- ASCP certification as an MT is preferred
- LIS experience is a plus
- Ability to perform hematology, chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology, immunology and blood bank testing
- Ability to operate AU680, AU480, Access2 and Triage meter instruments
- Ability to perform quality control, calibrations, instrument checks and equipment maintenance
- Ability to process specimens and blood products using appropriate packaging and transport methods
- Ability to travel between Marlborough and Nashoba/Groton as scheduled
- Ability to meet established turnaround times and deadlines
