About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform laboratory tests and report data used in patient diagnosis and treatment
- Perform Hematology II testing, including coagulation, urinalysis, rapid strep, Sofia flu, Strep. Pneumoniae, Legionella Ag, wet prep, qualitative HCG, and occult blood testing
- Perform Chemistry I testing using AU680, AU480, and Access2 instruments
- Perform Chemistry II testing using the Triage meter; create manifests and site batches for send-out testing
- Correlate test results and take follow-up action on questionable results
- Process specimens according to the Specimen Collection manual
- Operate and maintain laboratory instrumentation and complete maintenance, temperature, and other logs
- Perform shift start-up procedures, quality control, calibrations, and instrument checks
- Maintain adequate supplies and reagents; restock work benches and manage inventory using FIFO practices
- Perform testing across Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Microbiology as assigned
- Perform complex testing and prepare component blood products for transfusion
- Provide guidance and consultation to lower-level technologists, technicians, and others
- Process blood donor specimens for outside shipment and testing
- Send specimens and blood products between campuses and sites using appropriate packaging and transport methods
- Troubleshoot testing process discrepancies
- Rotate to the Marlboro Campus Lab–Medical Center
- Travel between Marlborough and Nashoba/Groton as scheduled to provide operational, administrative, or departmental support
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree or successful completion of an accredited four-year school of Medical Technology
- Three years of related experience
- Must qualify as a General Supervisor under CLIA regulations for high-complexity testing under 42 CFR 493.1461
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory sciences or medical technology from an accredited institution plus 1 year of laboratory training or experience in high-complexity testing; alternatively, an associate degree in laboratory science or MLT from an accredited institution plus at least 2 years of laboratory training/experience in high-complexity testing
- Ability to perform low, moderate and/or high complexity testing
- ASCP certification as an MT is preferred
- LIS experience is a plus
- Ability to perform testing and assignments within established turnaround times and deadlines
- Knowledge of Hematology, Chemistry, and Blood Bank protocols
- Ability to prepare component blood products for transfusion
- Ability to provide guidance on complex or unusual test results and standard Blood Bank procedures
- Ability to process and ship blood donor specimens and blood products using appropriate packaging and transport methods
- Ability to manage inventory using FIFO practices
- Ability to travel between Marlborough and Nashoba/Groton as scheduled
- Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, equivalent education and experience may be substituted
