About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Escort ambulatory patients and transport patients by wheelchair, stretcher or bed
  • Verify patient identification using two identifiers and complete Safe Patient Transport Forms
  • Monitor and respond to basic patient needs before, during and after transport
  • Provide handoff communication when patients are delivered to receiving units
  • Assist nursing staff and/or lift techs with moving, positioning and lateral transfer of patients using lift devices
  • Use personal protective equipment and follow infection-control procedures for patients on precautions
  • Deliver stretchers, beds, cribs and wheelchairs
  • Deep-clean transport equipment biannually and sanitize transport vehicles and ancillary equipment between uses
  • Transport patient specimens, pathology materials and blood products according to infection-control guidelines
  • Transport contaminated equipment to Sterile Processing
  • Deliver medical records, pharmaceuticals, X-ray films, sterile items, reports and other materials
  • Maintain job activity logs as required

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 6 months of hire
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Good interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation
  • Ability to work every other holiday and every other weekend
  • Six months’ experience in a hospital environment preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted unless certification, licensure or registration is required
