About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Build and maintain features across the TypeScript/Node.js backend and Vue.js front end
Ship features end to end and shape technical decisions
Design and update data models in MongoDB and PostgreSQL with senior-engineer review
Use AWS services including Lambda, S3, Aurora, DynamoDB, and IAM to develop and deploy work
Write clean, tested, maintainable code
Participate constructively in code reviews
Help build the new civic assembly platform, including modules within a plugin-based architecture
Communicate progress, blockers, and questions clearly and proactively
Collaborate with the CTO, product manager, program teams, and senior engineers
Mentor other engineers
Contribute to platforms powering Unify America's civic engagement programs

Requirements

What you’ll need

3+ years of professional software engineering experience
Solid experience with TypeScript and NodeJS
Experience with Django and Python
Experience with VueJS (preferred) or React
Working experience with PostgreSQL and MongoDB, including designing sensible schemas for well-scoped features without relying on AI tools
Experience with AWS services such as Lambda, S3, Aurora, DynamoDB, and IAM
Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude, GitHub Copilot, or ChatGPT judiciously
Clear communication skills and comfort working asynchronously on a distributed team
Initiative, reliability, and commitment to quality over volume
Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field preferred
Relevant certifications, bootcamp credentials, or equivalent professional experience welcome
Experience with NestJS is nice to have
Familiarity with Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code tools is nice to have
Experience in nonprofit, civic tech, or education technology is nice to have
Must be a resident of the United States
