About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection for inpatient, outpatient, and assigned off-site patients, including venipuncture, capillary collection, urine collections, breath testing, and glucose tolerance testing
  • Verify patient identity, test orders, and collection requirements before each draw
  • Select appropriate collection equipment and assess patient-specific factors
  • Enter and verify laboratory test orders in the EHR and resolve incomplete or inconsistent requisition details
  • Prioritize STAT, timed, and routine draws across bedside, outpatient draw sites, nursing home coverage, and pre-admission testing assignments
  • Process, label, store, and transport specimens according to established procedures
  • Assist with outpatient reception, answer phones, coordinate patient flow, maintain supply stock, and complete clerical and operational tasks
  • Identify collection issues, patient reactions, documentation gaps, and specimen concerns and escalate them appropriately
  • Maintain accountability for assigned collections, documentation accuracy, specimen handling, and service standards
  • Explain procedures clearly, reduce patient anxiety, and provide a professional patient experience
  • Support downtime workflows, system recovery activities, and onboarding or training support
  • Occasionally travel between organizational locations and operate a system-owned vehicle when required
  • Follow patient identification, specimen labeling, infection prevention, sharps safety, biohazard disposal, PPE, privacy, security, and data protection policies
  • Complete orientation, annual education, competency validation, and department training
  • Perform assigned duties during system downtimes and recovery periods
  • Adhere to current department on-call policy requirements
  • Support shared success, continuous improvement, and service excellence
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certification or equivalent preferred
  • Driver License preferred
  • Up to 1 year of direct experience performing the exact or very similar duties required by the job within the same role or function preferred
  • Up to 1 year of experience in the same work environment or setting (hospital, practice, department/division) preferred
  • Up to 1 year of technical/systems experience using specialized tools, software, or equipment required for the role preferred
  • Ability to perform venipuncture, capillary collection, urine collections, breath testing, and glucose tolerance testing
  • Ability to verify patient identity, test orders, collection requirements, and documentation
  • Ability to use EHR and related laboratory systems
  • Ability to follow specimen handling, infection prevention, sharps safety, biohazard disposal, PPE, and standard precaution procedures
  • Must maintain eligibility to meet organizational driving requirements when travel is necessary
