About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Advance barley stem strength research using advanced phenotyping and genomic tools
- Design, implement and manage cereal field trials evaluating stem strength, head retention and related traits
- Develop high-throughput phenotyping methodologies integrating imaging, mechanical testing and sensor-based measurements
- Conduct internationally competitive research
- Publish in high-impact journals and present findings at seminars and conferences
- Contribute to research proposals, reporting and project administration
- Support funding applications and timely project delivery
- Train, mentor and co-supervise students and junior researchers
- Engage industry partners and stakeholders
- Build an academic trajectory within a supportive interdisciplinary team
Requirements
What you’ll need- Hold or be near completing a PhD in cereal genetics or a closely related discipline
- Demonstrated experience designing, implementing and evaluating cereal field trials under diverse environmental and management conditions
- Experience developing innovative phenotyping approaches, ideally combining imaging, mechanical testing or sensor-based measurements for structural traits
- Quality research outputs, including journal publications and research reports
- Strong scientific writing and communication skills
- Ability to manage projects independently, meet deadlines, coordinate fieldwork logistics and maintain accurate experimental and data records
- Ability to engage collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and foster industry partnerships
- Valid Australian driving licence
- Current valid work rights for Australia; visa sponsorship is not available
- Working with Children Check required
