About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Build and operate Upbound Spaces in production across multi-tenant SaaS environments
Contribute to Upbound open-source projects, including Crossplane
Build customer-requested features and deliver new functionality
Investigate and debug complex customer-environment issues, including multi-control-plane scenarios, reconciliation problems, and performance bottlenecks
Create design documents and post-incident reviews that drive system improvements
Support the full lifecycle of scalable, reliable cloud services, from discovery and architecture through deployment and operational support
Write and maintain Go code interfacing with the Kubernetes API, including operators, controllers, and add-ons
Deploy, manage, and troubleshoot Kubernetes services using metrics, logs, and traces
Build operational tooling for debugging customer environments, analyzing control-plane health, and automating incident response
Author documentation, user guides, runbooks, and blog posts
Support releases for Spaces self-hosted distributions and diagnose customer-managed deployment issues
Participate in on-call rotation for Upbound Cloud and resolve incidents

Requirements

What you’ll need

Experience operating production cloud services at scale, including monitoring, alerting, incident response, post-mortems, and continuous improvement of service reliability
Strong debugging skills across distributed systems
Experience with observability tools including Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, and distributed tracing
Experience building and operating controllers that interact with the Kubernetes API server
Experience troubleshooting reconciliation loops, managing API rate limits, and optimizing controller performance
Comfort working directly with customers to understand, reproduce, and resolve complex technical issues
Clear communication and effective collaboration skills
Ability to participate in an on-call rotation
Ability to work from the San Francisco Bay Area or Seattle market is prioritized
