About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Set the overall trend and direction for designs each season across the respective category
  • Supervise designers and ensure designs and resulting products are appropriate for the Anthropologie customer
  • Contribute to seasonal trend and design direction across designs, labels, and categories
  • Shop and observe street fashion several times a year
  • Take photos and purchase samples for inspiration
  • Globally source fabrics and yarns within budgetary guidelines
  • Collaborate weekly with the Design Director and Buying team on emerging trends to chase in-season
  • Develop conceptual direction for the total product assortment with the Design Director each season
  • Collaborate with Production on lead times, minimum order requirements, and costing constraints
  • Design styles, develop or select trims, and identify colors for selected fabrics
  • Present development samples and color palettes for merchant review at Proto and Sample Review Meetings
  • Oversee setup of spec sheets for chosen bodies
  • Communicate fit and construction details to Technical Design
  • Complete technical sketches for domestic and overseas programs using CAD where possible
  • Travel to factories for program development and execution
  • Manage weekly fittings
  • Develop and train Assistant and Associate Designers
  • Set and renew training goals each review period
  • Motivate and encourage designers to be creative and support business needs

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Ability to recognize and accurately forecast fashion and cultural trends
  • Creative vision to identify trends in their early stages and understand their impact to fashion
  • Ability to adapt aspirational ideas for a broader audience
  • Ability to develop distinctive creative ideas for Anthropologie
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to research and report on industry trend direction, color direction, and fabric innovations approximately 9–12 months ahead of season
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and projects within deadlines
  • Excellent hand sketching and/or CAD skills in Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Comprehensive knowledge of apparel construction, including dyeing, silk screening, washing techniques, and other treatments
  • Thorough understanding of manufacturing techniques and processes
  • Knowledge and ability to source fabrics, trims, labels, and other production goods
  • Leadership, delegation, motivation, coaching, and team-development skills
  • Ability to provide feedback and performance evaluations in accordance with company guidelines
  • Ability to develop partnerships with Buyers, Directors, and Department heads
  • 7–10 years in women’s design
  • Strong understanding of fashion trends and the Anthropologie customer
  • Strong technical knowledge of fabrications and construction
  • Degree in Fashion Apparel preferred
