About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform pre-verification of insurance plans
  • Obtain prior authorization for cancer center procedures and services
  • Complete cancer center registration and scheduling
  • Provide financial counseling for eligible patients
  • Communicate with patients and insurance companies regarding insurance plans and medical benefit requirements
  • Manage patient and insurance collection requirements for billing
  • Update patient demographic information, copays, and appointments in medical office software
  • Conduct financial analyses and advanced mathematical computations
  • Develop ad hoc financial reports
  • Assist with financial surveys, month-end closing, and annual budgeting
  • Support quality improvement efforts and apply financial accounting standards
  • Evaluate and comply with internal controls for financial systems
  • Assist with annual external financial audit coordination
  • Collaborate with study coordinators, regulatory team members, leaders, and finance to reconcile financial-system discrepancies
  • Prepare financial reports and provide financial quality assurance and reporting analysis across departments
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in collections, registration, insurance verification, financial counseling, and patient accounts/billing or related
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Previous oncology billing experience in an outpatient medical office environment preferred
  • Required CPT and ICD-10 coding knowledge and experience
  • Knowledge of regulatory/governing and multiple payer guidelines and requirements
  • Knowledge of medical office software for updating patient demographics, copays, and scheduling appointments
  • Understanding of patient and/or insurance collection requirements for billing
  • Microsoft Excel and Word knowledge or ability to learn cash control procedures
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with changing priorities, prioritize workflow, problem solve, maintain confidentiality, and function independently and as a team member
  • Ability to interact with individuals of all cultures and levels of authority
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Ability to travel between campus buildings, remote facilities, and out of town as needed
  • Ability to lift/push/pull 100 lbs.; use Safe Handling Equipment for weights over 35 lbs.
  • Medical terminology knowledge preferred
  • May require safety equipment such as a HEPA mask for infection prevention
  • On-call responsibilities as directed
