About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Collaborate with nursing staff and the multidisciplinary treatment team through rounds, patient care conferences, and patient advocacy
- Maintain a therapeutic milieu and monitor patients and the unit environment for safety
- Report changes in patients’ physical and psychological status
- Identify situations requiring restraints or seclusion and demonstrate proper procedures
- Administer and accurately score the MMSE and provide instructions for the MMPI
- Structure individual time with patients and support therapeutic goals
- Protect patient confidentiality and explain patient rights
- Encourage participation in community meetings, groups, and activities
- Use de-escalation techniques and behavior modification principles
- Provide and coordinate patient care under the direction of an RN/LPN
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, vital signs, meal monitoring, goal setting, and leisure skills
- Perform delegated nursing procedures and document care and patient responses
- Escort or transport patients to other hospital areas and assist with special procedures
- Maintain stock in treatment areas, dayroom, and galleys
- Plan and conduct group activities under documented supervision and evaluation by an Activities Therapist
- Attend staff meetings, seminars, inservices, and training
- Follow policies, dress code, and delegated responsibilities
- Assist in precepting new employees and assume other responsibilities assigned by the manager
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Sociology, Social Science or related field preferred, or five years of experience in psychiatric care preferred
- Experience in a hospital setting preferred
- BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) - AHA approved required
- New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation
- Successful completion of unit orientation checklist within six weeks of hire required
- Understands basic principles of human growth and development required
- Record clear of sexual misconduct or abusive behavior toward others required
- Competent to successfully interact with patients according to their special needs based on the age of the patient served required
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Current certification in CPR and mandatory yearly inservices and training
