About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide daily care of cancer patients
  • Interpret and deliver radiation treatments according to prescriptions and radiation oncologist instructions
  • Perform patient simulations and provide clinical instruction for radiation therapy students
  • Participate in Brachytherapy procedures, on-call coverage, and treatment scheduling
  • Assist with treatment planning, tumor localization, and dosimetry
  • Triage sick patients to nursing for evaluation
  • Perform daily quality assurance protocols
  • Review prescriptions, diagnoses, charts, and patient identification
  • Schedule appointments and provide pre- and post-treatment education
  • Prepare treatment rooms, equipment, immobilization devices, field sizes, treatment devices, distances, and lead protection
  • Collaborate with physicists and dosimetrists at treatment initiation
  • Coordinate with supportive care physicians, nurses, and social workers
  • Acquire, check, process, and file treatment images
  • Transfer patients to the treatment couch and monitor IVs and other equipment
  • Monitor patients during treatment and assist with emergency treatment when necessary
  • Maintain patient markings according to physician direction
  • Reinforce treatment-care recommendations and change dressings as necessary
  • Ensure radiation safety measures and protocols are followed
  • Check daily charges and accurately document treatment doses
  • Use the original electronic chart and verify patient identity and treatment details during daily timeout
  • Set up CT for IMRT and 3-D patients and create immobilization devices for 2-D, 3-D, and IMRT patients
  • Document setup instructions and information required for dosimetry calculations
  • Update the simulation manual
  • Review documents and prepare blocks for next-day simulations
  • Work mandatory overtime and shift work when required

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Completion of an accredited program in Radiation Therapy required
  • Registration through American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is required
  • BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) - AHA approved is required
  • New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation
  • Analytical ability to set up equipment properly and position and align patients and equipment to very close tolerances
  • Interpersonal skills to explain therapy and treatment programs to patients
  • Strong communication skills with physicians, staff, and physicists
  • Ability to communicate with and provide care for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients
  • Machine warm-up required within 6 months of hire
  • Ability to run simulation alone optional
  • Lead HDR optional
  • Lead Stereotactic procedures optional
