About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Complete rotations through DTP’s three legal branches: Public Law and Information Access, Commercial and Operations, and Legislation
  • Provide advice under guidance and supervision on statutory interpretation, administrative law, employment law, human rights law, FOI and privacy, legislative drafting, commercial law and commercial disputes
  • Support management of general litigation
  • Draft contracts and legislation
  • Conduct legal research and analysis
  • Work collaboratively with Legal and the wider Department
  • Apply initiative, attention to detail and feedback while developing legal skills

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Completed Australian tertiary qualification in Law
  • Graduated, or be due to graduate, from an Australian or New Zealand University between 1 December 2024 and 31 January 2027
  • Australian citizen, permanent resident, New Zealand citizen, or holder of a valid visa with full working rights for the required period
  • Relevant pre-employment screening and reference checks
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Clear and confident communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability and willingness to learn across different areas of law
  • Ability to build positive working relationships and collaborate with colleagues, clients and stakeholders
  • Ability to manage competing tasks and meet deadlines
  • Initiative and sound judgement, with ability to seek guidance on unfamiliar or complex matters
  • Excellent computer literacy, particularly in Microsoft Office
  • Admitted, or eligible to be admitted, as a lawyer in Victoria (desirable)
