About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Interview applicants and recipients using adaptive techniques
- Determine eligibility and benefit levels using automated systems and manual methods
- Process SNAP, Medicaid, TANF, Energy, General Relief, Auxiliary Grants, Refugee Cash, and Medical Assistance applications
- Analyze information and policy to determine and redetermine ongoing eligibility
- Calculate income and resource eligibility under state and federal guidelines
- Explain benefit programs, rights, responsibilities, agency services, and community resources
- Identify social problems and refer clients to social workers as needed
- Research, interpret, and apply mandated program policies and procedures
- Maintain records and caseload integrity; identify errors and potential fraud
- Evaluate data consistency and substantiate accuracy when needed
- Respond to appeals, prepare appeal summaries and supporting documentation, and participate in hearings
- Participate in unit and agency meetings, workgroups, teams, training, and learning opportunities
- Recommend internal policy and procedure changes
- Perform related tasks as required
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma supplemented with additional training and related work experience, or equivalent combination of training and experience
- General knowledge of interviewing, time management, and public social service organizations
- Knowledge of social, economic, and health problems and human behavior/social functioning
- Mathematics knowledge for percentages, formulas, and averages
- Interviewing, data collection, and investigation techniques
- Ability to analyze policy and identify missing information and gaps
- Ability to access data such as estates, retirement accounts, and real estate
- Professional confidentiality ethics
- Computer and software proficiency
- High attention to detail
- Effective relationship-building with clients, coworkers, management, and the public
- Sound judgment, discretion, tact, and resourcefulness
- Effective oral and written communication
- Ability to prepare clear and concise reports
- Ability to organize and prioritize multiple activities and projects
- Must reside within the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Must drive and meet the County’s safe driver policy eligibility requirements
- Willingness to travel occasionally overnight
