About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Receive referrals and assist with implementation of rehabilitation plans/programs under the direction of Rehabilitation Specialists
  • Provide input into planning, implementation, modification, and evaluation of rehabilitative treatment plans as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrate and teach adaptive independent-living skills, including personal and household management, communication, basic indoor orientation and mobility, basic keyboarding, and technology training
  • Assist Specialists with maintenance and inventory of adaptive devices and demonstrate consumer products and low vision aids
  • Monitor and evaluate treatment and care plans and report observations and progress to Specialists
  • Provide functional direction to clients and collaterals to maximize the rehabilitation process
  • Maintain case data and documentation according to VLRC systems and procedures
  • Collaborate with the rehabilitation team in service delivery, coordinate travel schedules, and facilitate program development
  • Support and consult with individuals and families regarding adjustment to vision loss
  • Attend multidisciplinary team meetings
  • Promote awareness of vision-health issues through consultation, public education, and in-service training
  • Provide timely, creative solutions and recommend process improvements
  • Problem-solve in response to unique individual needs
  • Exercise judgment when working with clients, escalating issues, and determining referrals to VLRC or external services
  • Abide by VLRC privacy and security policy

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to adapt to changing situations

  • Strong interpersonal and diplomacy skills
  • Maturity and sensitivity, with emotional and social stability when working with clients
  • Strong ethics and ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Mature and professional demeanor
  • Skilled in Microsoft software applications and ability to effectively care for computer hardware and learn various applications as applicable for the position
  • Excellent navigation skills
  • Post-secondary education and/or prior experience in a Rehabilitation Assistant program, Occupational or Physical Therapy Assistant program, Social Work or related field preferred
  • Previous working/volunteering experience with individuals who are blind or partially sighted or with combined loss of hearing and sight an asset
  • Clean Criminal Record required
  • Criminal Reference Check required for vulnerable populations
  • Willingness to work flexible hours
  • Willingness to work in a variety of settings (virtually, VLRC clinic, client home, community settings etc.)
  • Travel will be required
