About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide senior-level mechanical design engineering leadership for controllable solid propulsion systems
  • Lead and develop a team of approximately 10 engineers
  • Lead complex mechanical design challenges for solid rocket motor systems, specialized igniters, pressure vessels, actuators, hot gas valves, and rocket thrusters
  • Perform trade-off analyses and drive multidisciplinary design optimization
  • Develop detailed 2D and 3D CAD models and technical drawings
  • Apply and interpret complex GD&T and statistical tolerance analysis
  • Set up and validate structural, dynamic, thermal, and combustion simulations
  • Apply expertise in advanced metals, refractory metals, ceramics, insulators, composites, and additive manufacturing to support design for manufacturability, welding, molding/casting, and assembly planning
  • Contribute to propellant chemistry evaluation, grain design optimization, advanced ballistics modeling, and combustion/transient response prediction
  • Provide technical direction and programmatic oversight across mechanical engineering
  • Ensure alignment of design, performance, and risk with mission and contractual requirements
  • Mentor and develop engineering team members through coaching, feedback, training, and growth opportunities
  • Support resource planning, staffing allocation, annual operating plan and budget inputs, engineering best practices, performance appraisals, recruitment, and hiring
  • Perform team management duties representing approximately 20% of total job duties
  • Report to the Director of Engineering within the Controllable Solid Propulsion department

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline from an accredited college/university
  • At least 10 years of mechanical design experience
  • Advanced technical and organizational leadership skills, with ability to manage ambiguity and competing priorities
  • Strong analytical, communication, and presentation skills, including ability to engage executive and customer audiences
  • Strong experience with CAD modeling and technical drawing creation in SolidWorks, including complex GD&T and tolerance analysis
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in design, development, testing, or manufacturing of controllable solid propulsion systems
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop diverse, high-performing engineering teams
  • Able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level
  • Travel approximately 10% of the time
  • Must be a U.S. Person: a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., or protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3)
  • Must be eligible to obtain required export authorizations from the U.S. Department of State or U.S. Department of Commerce
