About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs on switcher and local locomotives
  • Adhere to company safety standards and applicable local, state, and federal locomotive maintenance and repair rules
  • Assist other associates and complete special assignments
  • Fuel, sand, and conduct daily inspections of locomotives
  • Perform preventive maintenance according to established schedules
  • Clean oil, fill tanks, and adjust equipment for smooth operations
  • Complete basic repairs on equipment and machines
  • Troubleshoot and repair diesel engines, electrical systems, and air brake systems
  • Perform field service work using company vehicles
  • Travel to locations in and around Bronx, New York, to perform field maintenance duties
  • Conduct regular visual inspections of maintenance equipment and company vehicles
  • Assist the maintenance crew with maintenance functions according to established procedures, policies, and safety regulations
  • Complete maintenance records accurately and on time
  • Update maintenance log books and sign off completed work orders
  • Maintain effective communication and coordination with area personnel
  • Complete maintenance functions in a timely manner to meet customer needs
  • Suggest improvements to operational procedures
  • Keep management informed of area activities and significant equipment problems
  • Maintain a clean, secure, and well-maintained work area
  • Stay informed of maintenance requirements
  • Complete special projects as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school degree or equivalent
  • Training in maintenance and repair operations may be required
  • Safety certification may be required
  • Knowledge of basic mechanics
  • Knowledge of machine testing procedures
  • Understanding of equipment maintenance requirements
  • One year in diesel engine or electrical repairs
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to schedule work
  • Solid problem-solving skills
  • Good oral communication abilities
  • Ability to use related mechanical and testing equipment
  • Proficiency with computer and office equipment, including MS Office
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Successful completion of a drug screen, as applicable
  • Successful completion of a fitness for duty test, as applicable
  • Ability to work second shift
