About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead the squad responsible for payment modules connecting the platform to acquirers and payment schemes
Own the architecture and technical roadmap of the payment modules
Lead new acquirer integrations end to end, including analysis, design, implementation, certification, rollout and monitoring
Manage technical debt in a mature codebase built on an in-house framework on top of Spring
Drive platform evolution from Java 21 toward Java 25 and toward event-driven, fault-isolated services
Set and uphold engineering standards for design reviews, code quality, automated testing and observability
Lead, coach and grow a squad of engineers distributed across Switzerland, Lithuania and Ukraine
Run regular 1:1s, provide feedback, create development plans and support career growth
Hire and onboard engineers with the Head of Engineering
Spread knowledge through documentation, pairing and rotation
Own production quality through monitoring, alerting, incident response and root cause analysis
Provide validated estimates and technical analysis for PI Planning and Definition of Ready
Balance new features against reliability and technical debt reduction
Collaborate with the Product Manager on discovery, shaping and prioritization
Partner with the Head of Engineering on tribe-level goals, capacity and escalations
Collaborate with other tech leads on standards, cross-squad initiatives and problem solving
Interface with architecture and DevOps teams on designs, infrastructure and operations
Support customer support with technical escalations and provide sales with feasibility answers

Requirements

What you’ll need

10+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years leading a team
A university degree in Computer Science or a closely associated discipline is required
Deep Java and Spring expertise
Experience working inside and improving a custom framework built on top of Spring
Strong command of Hibernate/JPA and relational database performance
Experience with PostgreSQL at high transaction volume
Hands-on experience with microservices, including service boundaries, APIs, asynchronous messaging, failure modes and day-2 operations
Payment industry experience, including acquirer or scheme integrations, authorization, capture, refund and chargeback flows, 3-D Secure, and PCI DSS awareness
Track record of reducing technical debt in production systems without stopping delivery
Software architecture skills, including system design, ADRs, pragmatic trade-offs, and design review
Production operations experience, including incident response and post-incident improvement
Experience running services in the cloud
Experience with AWS services and Kubernetes
Genuine interest in people leadership
Builder's leadership spirit and ability to support the Head of Engineering and collaborate across the company
Fluent command of the English language
Nice to have: exposure to ISO 8583 or ISO 20022
Nice to have: familiarity with e-commerce ecosystems and payment plugins such as Shopify, Lightspeed, Shopware, Magento and WooCommerce
Nice to have: experience with event-driven architectures and migrating synchronous legacy flows to asynchronous ones
Nice to have: JVM performance analysis, including thread dumps, blocked thread detection, GC and connection pool tuning
Nice to have: experience in regulated or certified environments such as PCI DSS or financial services
Nice to have: experience leading distributed or multi-country teams
