About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design, develop, maintain, and debug gameplay and game AI software architecture and systems
  • Act as a key technical contributor within the gameplay team
  • Own gameplay and AI areas and influence architecture, scope, and technical trade-offs with Design and Production
  • Mentor the team and remove blockers on complex gameplay and AI topics
  • Build player-experience systems, including interactive mechanics, gameplay features, conditions, gameplay tags, volumes, progression, and encounters
  • Build game AI systems, including NPC behaviors, navigation, decision-making, and encounter integration
  • Analyze and optimize performance using profiling, CPU and memory budgets, time-slicing, and behavioral LOD
  • Collaborate with Level Design, Game Design, Art, VFX, Programming, and QA on requirements, feasibility, scope, design completeness, and technical risks
  • Iterate on gameplay and AI features through data-driven tuning, in-game debugging tools, and validation
  • Identify dependencies across teams, systems, and features, and align Production and the various disciplines
  • Participate in code reviews and technical validation at gameplay and AI milestones
  • Produce technical documentation, including TDDs, architecture notes, and content integration guides
  • Stay current with developments in the engine and gameplay and AI practices
  • Promote best practices and contribute to the continuous improvement of high-performance software

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • At least 8 years of C++ programming experience in the video game industry
  • Contributions to at least two AAA titles, including one shipped console or PC release
  • Strong command of C++ fundamentals, including object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, templates, and multithreaded programming
  • Extensive experience with gameplay and AI software architecture
  • Experience with large-scale programming for consoles and PC across prototyping, production, delivery, and post-launch
  • Optimization and debugging skills on PC and consoles
  • Strong 3D mathematics skills, including linear algebra, trigonometry, vectors, matrices, and quaternions
  • Understanding of technical animation constraints
  • Proficiency in Unreal Engine 5, including the gameplay framework, State Trees, EQS, navigation, and gameplay feature integration
  • Knowledge of Perforce, JIRA, and bug-tracking tools
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and transparently, both in writing and verbally
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to prioritize work with Production and independently manage execution
  • Ability to drive ambiguous technical topics forward
  • Ability to guide less experienced team members and collaborate with internal and external resources
  • Passion for video games
