About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Keep the platform behind Welcome's travel product reliable, fast, scalable and secure.
- Make architecture and infrastructure decisions and set engineering standards.
- Own the technical roadmap with the Product Manager of the Core team.
- Define and track reliability targets for bookings, ride matching and payments.
- Run the incident process and on-call, reducing recovery times.
- Improve monitoring and alerting using New Relic and Rollbar.
- Lead architecture decisions for scaling backend systems and services.
- Identify and fix performance bottlenecks across the application, background jobs and database.
- Tune PostgreSQL queries and indexes; plan data growth and archiving; manage replication, backups and restore drills; and change large tables without downtime.
- Ensure the platform handles peak season and partner growth.
- Define and evolve Azure infrastructure strategy while balancing performance, reliability and cost.
- Define and enforce security practices for access control, secrets management, and build and release pipelines.
- Prepare the platform for PCI, GDPR, SOC 2 and ISO 27001 compliance.
- Improve internal tooling, CI/CD and deployment workflows.
- Organise and prioritise technical work in Jira with the Product Manager.
- Write technical documentation, runbooks and development plans, converting them into Jira tickets.
- Participate in grooming, planning, kick-off meetings, retrospectives and demos.
Requirements
What you’ll need- 8+ years of software engineering experience, with strong backend and systems experience.
- BS/MS degree in Computer Science or a related subject.
- Proven experience operating and scaling production systems.
- Strong understanding of system design, distributed systems and performance trade-offs.
- Strong PostgreSQL skills on large databases: query and index tuning, replication, large-table migrations, backups.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (Azure preferred), Docker and infrastructure-as-code.
- Experience with Redis, Elasticsearch and a message broker (RabbitMQ or similar) at production scale.
- Experience with observability, monitoring and incident management.
- Strong security fundamentals: access control, networking, secrets.
- CI/CD experience, including zero-downtime deploys.
- Organised and a clear writer, comfortable working in Jira.
- A hands-on mindset: able to go from strategy to implementation.
- Experience with Ruby on Rails, Sidekiq, Puma and PostGIS, or similar.
- Exposure to compliance frameworks (SOC 2, ISO 27001).
- Experience with AWS or Google Cloud alongside Azure.
- Experience moving a long-running application to containers or Kubernetes.
- A travel, mobility or marketplace background with real-time operations.
