About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Develop and own Wikimedia Enterprise's external communications strategy across media/trade press, speaking engagements, and other channels
  • Build relationships with reporters and conference organizers to secure coverage and speaking opportunities
  • Serve as primary media liaison, manage daily press inquiries, prepare spokespeople, staff interviews, and handle information and speaking requests
  • Lead rapid-response media efforts and triage sensitive, fast-moving situations
  • Partner with internal teams to develop narratives and thought leadership
  • Guide, produce, and review press statements, blogs, pitch notes and lists, briefing documents, and other communications materials
  • Coordinate end-to-end communications workflows for major external launches and announcements with the Enterprise Growth team
  • Align the Wikimedia Enterprise growth plan with the Foundation's annual communications calendar
  • Build relationships and lead cooperative efforts with Wikimedia Foundation colleagues, volunteers, affiliates, and external partners
  • Manage external vendors such as PR agencies
  • Use data and customer insights to refine messaging, content, and strategy
  • Set communications goals and KPIs, track results against the growth plan, and share actionable insights with leadership and stakeholders
  • Report to the Communications Manager, with a dotted line to the President of Wikimedia Enterprise

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • At least 8+ years of communications experience, including senior/lead-level experience with minimal oversight in a tech and/or B2B tech environment or supporting a commercial product line
  • Experience bridging communications and marketing/growth functions
  • Experience developing and executing earned media strategy and thought leadership
  • Experience building relationships with press, partners, conference organizers, and wider stakeholders
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, including influencing senior and executive stakeholders
  • Sound judgment on reputational risk and sensitivity
  • Ability to operate with ambiguity and take ownership with minimal onboarding
  • Strong writing and editing skills across press materials, marketing copy, and internal briefing documents
  • Strong editorial judgment for marketing materials, campaigns, web copy, social, blogs, and thought leadership
  • Experience tying communications to business results through metrics and impact measurement
  • Experience working in a matrixed organization with dotted-line reporting
  • Experience working remotely across multiple time zones and emerging markets
  • Experience overseeing and managing external agency relationships
  • Current work authorization required in the applicant's location for non-US employees
  • Preferred: experience in nonprofit, open-source, mission-driven, or community-governed organizations
  • Preferred: understanding of AI, data licensing, and content provenance debates
  • Preferred: familiarity with Wikimedia, Wikipedia, or free-knowledge/open-content spaces
  • Preferred: background in tech, media, or platform companies navigating AI-related content, licensing, or data issues
