Key responsibilities & impact
  • Represent public- and private-sector clients, including nonprofit organizations, before municipal and county boards, commissions, and councils on zoning, permitting, and land use matters
  • Guide comprehensive plan amendments, re-zonings, special exceptions, zoning code amendments, street vacations, subdivision approvals, and environmental reviews from strategy through approval
  • Prepare and present applications, petitions, staff submittals, and supporting materials
  • Appear at public hearings and administrative proceedings
  • Counsel clients on land development regulations, concurrency, vested rights, development agreements, and approval procedures
  • Collaborate with engineers, planners, architects, consultants, lenders, and attorneys across firm practices
  • Cultivate lasting relationships with clients, regulators, and decision-makers
  • Assume significant responsibility for high-profile growth and development matters with limited supervision

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Approximately 5+ years of private practice experience with a substantial focus on land use, zoning, entitlements, permitting, local government representation, and real estate development matters
  • Demonstrated success advising developers, property owners, investors, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and public-sector clients
  • Significant experience handling comprehensive plan amendments, re-zonings, special exceptions, variances, zoning code amendments, site plan and subdivision approvals, street vacations, and environmental reviews
  • Proven ability to interpret and apply land development regulations and navigate staff review
  • Substantial experience presenting before municipal and county boards, commissions, and councils
  • Experience representing clients in quasi-judicial and administrative hearings
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to communicate complex regulatory concepts clearly
  • Ability to manage multiple sophisticated engagements and project teams with limited supervision
  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Membership in The Florida Bar in good standing, eligibility for admission, or willingness to sit for the Florida Bar Examination in the near future
  • Florida Bar Board Certification in City, County and Local Government Law or a related specialty is preferred
  • Existing Sarasota-Manatee local government, planning, and development relationships or an advanced degree in real estate, environmental law, land use, or urban planning are strongly preferred
