About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide on-site commissioning leadership to Operations, contractors, engineering, and support staff
  • Direct implementation of the Asset Commissioning Process and coordinate commissioning activities
  • Develop electrical commissioning strategies, system/subsystem boundaries, and integrated commissioning schedules
  • Schedule pre-commissioning meetings, staff commissioning teams, and mobilize teams to site
  • Monitor commissioning progress and adjust resources as needed
  • Review electrical design deliverables for commissioning readiness
  • Develop and execute FAT testing, software testing, commissioning work plans, gas handling plans, and vendor checklists
  • Schedule and coordinate vendor representatives
  • Verify mechanical completion and electrical construction turnover packages before energization
  • Lead electrical commissioning and startup of power generation assets, substations, and balance-of-plant electrical systems
  • Direct pre-functional and functional testing of electrical equipment
  • Oversee protective relay testing and verification
  • Develop and execute energization, switching, LOTO, and backfeed plans in compliance with NFPA 70E and company standards
  • Coordinate generator synchronization, load testing, performance testing, black start capability, and capacity/heat rate verification
  • Manage integration and testing of PLC/DCS, generator controls, SCADA, power management systems, and utility/plant control communications
  • Coordinate activities, outages, and approvals with Operations and internal functional groups
  • Coordinate interconnection commissioning, witness testing, metering verification, and commercial operation requirements with utilities, transmission owners, and ISOs/RTOs
  • Identify commissioning risks and develop mitigation plans
  • Communicate commissioning status to Project Leaders and partners
  • Ensure acceptance testing aligns with NETA ATS standards and manufacturer requirements
  • Deliver complete turnover to Operations, including test records, relay settings, punch list closure, as-built drawings, O&M manuals, spare parts, and training
  • Lead lessons-learned reviews and improve commissioning standards, checklists, and procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET accredited school
  • Minimum fifteen (15) years related experience in operations, construction, or commissioning for oil/gas pipelines, meter stations, power plants, or facilities
  • Ability to travel up to 75%
  • Outstanding organizational/interpersonal skills and commitment to safety
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications, specifically Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other scheduling/supporting software programs
  • Experience with constructing and commissioning new oil/gas assets
  • Experience commissioning gas-fired power generation, behind-the-meter generation, or substation/interconnection projects
  • Excellent teamwork, communication skills, and shared ownership practices
  • Ability to read engineering prints and technical schematics
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, including single-line/one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, wiring/interconnect diagrams, relay logic, and protection and control drawings
  • Working knowledge of power system fundamentals, including generator and transformer theory, protective relaying, grounding, arc flash studies, and short-circuit/coordination studies
  • Familiarity with electrical test equipment and methods, including insulation resistance, hipot/VLF cable testing, transformer turns ratio, winding resistance, power factor/Doble testing, breaker timing, and relay test sets
  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited school and minimum twenty (20) years related experience
  • Preferred: Direct experience commissioning power generation facilities, substations, or utility-scale electrical infrastructure
  • Preferred: Prior leadership experience
  • Preferred: Experience with major power generation OEMs and switchgear/transformer vendors during startup
  • Preferred: Experience working with utilities and transmission operators on interconnection commissioning, and familiarity with NERC reliability standards
  • Preferred: Experience with battery energy storage systems, renewable-integrated generation, or microgrid controls
