About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead, develop and maintain relationships with state government and regulatory agencies, elected and appointed officials, and nongovernmental organizations
- Advocate for projects, business growth, operations, and project execution support
- Track, report, and influence state legislation, regulation, and policy development
- Align advocacy with business priorities for existing and prospective operational areas
- Coordinate state and local policy issues at the federal level when needed
- Develop and implement a comprehensive issues management process
- Establish and cultivate executive relationships with government leaders, policymakers, and regulatory agencies
- Influence policies and regulations and enhance the company’s reputation
- Build relationships to establish trust, mitigate obstacles, communicate priorities and strategies, and sustain efforts in new communities
- Provide leadership updates on legislative and regulatory developments
- Develop company position papers, collateral, fact sheets, and presentations
- Participate in technical partner groups, trade associations, coalitions, and advisory or industry committees
- Support implementation plans and tools for new regulations or rules
- Develop strategies for high-risk issues
- Educate state and local officials, peers, and key influencers about the industry and business
- Manage outside consultants and collaborate with internal and external audiences
- Manage department budgets
- Travel to states or cities within the coverage area as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in business, political science or communications
- Minimum of seven (7) years' direct experience in government affairs, customer/business partner relations or related field
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
- Safety as the utmost priority
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications and PC skills
- Understanding of energy policy, with a specific focus on legislation and/or the regulatory process
- Ability to work with elected officials across the political spectrum to build support and consensus
- Understanding of corporate communications tools and implementation with internal and external audiences
- Detailed understanding of the legislative process/rules and practice of government and regulatory affairs and outreach
- Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
- Ability to establish rapport with senior leaders and officials
- Ability to work under high pressure in a dynamic environment and collaborate across a matrixed organization
- Approximately 50% travel expected
- Master’s degree and ten (10) years' experience in a State House, Governor's office, or federal congressional office within the assigned geographic region preferred
- Experience in political or issues campaigns preferred
