About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Assess the needs of individual workers
  • Administer benefit provisions of the Workers’ Compensation Act
  • Lead development of goal-oriented return-to-work case plans
  • Proactively manage timely and safe return-to-work processes with injured workers and employers
  • Liaise and collaborate with employers, health-care providers, unions, and other service providers
  • Ensure access to appropriate medical and vocational rehabilitation services
  • Manage, organize, and prioritize assigned high-volume caseloads
  • Prepare reasoned plain-language decisions detailing issues, policy tests, evidence, rationale, and conclusions
  • Act as principal decision maker on assigned claims
  • Communicate entitlement decisions verbally and in writing
  • Verify and authorize benefit entitlements, services, and medical aid
  • Make fiscally responsible decisions and defend approvals or denials in writing
  • Report to a Claims Management leader

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • A University Degree is required
  • Five years of experience in medical management, disability management, vocational counseling, vocational rehabilitation, or related work
  • Either have, or be willing to obtain, certification in disability management within two years of employment
  • Knowledge of social agencies and available services/benefits such as Social Assistance, Employment Insurance, and Canada Pension Plan Disability
  • Knowledge of or experience with relevant legislation is an asset, including the Workers’ Compensation Act, Workplace Health Safety, Compensation Commission Act, Firefighters Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Human Rights Act, Privacy of Information Act, Employment Standards Act, and Employment Insurance Act
  • Critical thinking and reasoning for decision-making and writing is an asset
  • Experience interpreting and implementing legislation and policy is an asset
  • Written and spoken competence in English and French is required
