About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Prepare and perform first-line review of monthly and quarterly reconciliations for WRI Europe entities
  • Support monthly and year-end finance closure, including journal entries, accruals, prepayments and reclassifications
  • Coordinate and monitor expense tracking, coding, approvals and documentation
  • Process or review vendor invoices and purchase orders for Europe entities
  • Prepare and help execute payment runs
  • Assist with cash-flow forecasts and monitor cash positions
  • Support budget monitoring and prepare budget-versus-actual reports with variance commentary
  • Act as an operational contact point for internal finance questions
  • Propose improvements to accounting processes and controls
  • Help document and consistently apply systems, policies and processes
  • Assist with monitoring statutory and internal finance-policy compliance
  • Support internal and external audit preparation
  • Support configuration of accounting and budgeting systems and local regulatory reporting needs
  • Monitor ERP and related-system data quality
  • Maintain the WRI Europe Accounting Handbook
  • Support system and process improvements, dashboards, operational reports and ad-hoc analysis
  • Provide backup support for the Regional Manager or accounting staff

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Completed bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or a related field
  • Full-time relevant experience with accounting processes, year-end closing work and audit procedures
  • Demonstrated understanding of accounting principles and monthly closing procedures
  • Experience contributing to the set-up of policies and processes
  • Competence in budgeting, financial analysis and forecasting
  • Experience preparing dashboards or management reports for non-finance stakeholders
  • Ability to interpret financial information for a non-technical audience
  • Experience collaborating effectively with a distributed team
  • Existing work authorization required for candidates based in the UK; WRI cannot sponsor UK visas
  • Accounting qualification such as ACCA, CPA, CMA or equivalent is advantageous
  • Experience managing and mentoring teams is advantageous
  • Experience with Workday, Time & Expense and online payment processing systems, or similar ERP and expense tools, is advantageous
  • Experience with donor-funded projects or grants within an international NGO is desirable
  • Experience with system implementation, automation, testing and troubleshooting with external vendors/consultants is a plus
