About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Prune, remove, and fell trees, limbs, and shrubs away from power lines
  • Load vehicles and equipment with manageable limbs and logs
  • Use climbing equipment, lift trucks, safety belts, climbing lines, ladders, hand saws, ground saws, and pruners
  • Cut branches and trunk sections aloft and lower them using rigging lines
  • Fell trees or spars and split them into manageable pieces
  • Work near energized power lines under qualified supervision and potentially supervise non-qualified employees after meeting qualification prerequisites
  • Apply herbicides and growth regulators and maintain application records
  • Educate less experienced employees on company policies, procedures, safety practices, approved work methods, and OSHA regulations
  • Repair minor job-site property damage and escalate issues to the General Foreperson
  • Feed brush and debris into a woodchipper
  • Set up warning signs, barriers, flags, and traffic-control devices; direct traffic and cooperate with property owners, customers, and emergency personnel
  • Inspect and perform routine maintenance on company vehicles, equipment, and tools; report specialized maintenance needs
  • Remain on duty and travel outside the regular work location during emergencies or natural disasters
  • Drive and operate assigned vehicles and equipment
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance and comply with applicable laws and company policies

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Minimum of 3 months of experience working on tree trimming or clearing crews, or successful completion of applicable skills assessments
  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required
  • Must have valid First-Aid and CPR cards or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
  • Basic knowledge of trees, including identification, growth habits, and arboricultural techniques for trimming, pruning, repairing, maintaining, and removing trees near energized conductors
  • Knowledge of ANSI Z133.1-current version and ANSI A300
  • Knowledge of electrical circuits and ability to read and understand circuit maps
  • Knowledge of OSHA electric power generation, transmission, and distribution standards, including 29 CFR 1910.269
  • Ability to determine nominal voltage, use insulated tools near energized parts, and distinguish exposed live parts from other electrical equipment parts
  • Ability to read and write job instructions and safety information
  • Ability to recognize poisonous plants
  • Ability to wear required PPE
  • Ability to work long hours and overtime during emergencies, including holidays, weekends, and storm work; subject to call-out work
  • Knowledge of and training to perform tree and bucket rescue
  • Ability to operate and service required tools and equipment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's or commercial driver's license and DOT medical card, as applicable
  • Ability to drive a vehicle with an attached chipper or other trailing unit
  • Maintain herbicide application certification or equivalent as required by company and law
  • English reading, writing, and speaking required
  • Extensive travel required (greater than 50%)
  • Ability to meet physical requirements, including lifting up to 50 pounds frequently and exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally
  • Ability to work outdoors in rugged terrain and tolerate exposure to weather, noise, vibration, electrical current, heights, chemicals, and other hazards
