About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Prune, remove, and fell trees, limbs, and shrubs away from power lines
- Load vehicles and equipment with manageable limbs and logs
- Use climbing equipment, lift trucks, safety belts, climbing lines, ladders, saws, pruners, and rigging lines
- Cut and lower branches or trunk sections from aloft
- Fell trees or spars and split them into manageable pieces
- Work near energized power lines while directly supervising non-qualified employees
- Apply herbicides with growth regulators and maintain application records
- Educate less experienced employees on company policies, safety practices, approved work methods, and OSHA regulations
- Repair minor job-site property damage and escalate issues to the General Foreperson
- Feed brush and debris into a woodchipper
- Set up warning signs, barriers, flags, hand signals, and traffic-control devices
- Cooperate with property owners, customers, and emergency personnel
- Inspect and perform routine maintenance on vehicles, equipment, and tools
- Report specialized maintenance needs to the General Foreperson
- Respond to emergencies and natural disasters for the duration of the event when required
- Drive and operate assigned vehicles and equipment
- Assist with obtaining written property-owner permission
- Promote positive customer, public, and employee relations
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance
Requirements
What you’ll need- Minimum of 1 year of experience working on tree trimming or clearing crews, or successful completion of applicable skills assessments
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required
- Must have valid First-Aid and CPR cards or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s or commercial driver’s license and DOT medical card, dependent upon division and utility/contract requirements
- Maintain herbicide application certification or equivalent as required
- Knowledge of trees, identification, growth habits, and arboricultural techniques near energized conductors
- Knowledge of ANSI Z133.1 and ANSI A300 standards
- Knowledge of electrical circuits and ability to read circuit maps
- Knowledge of OSHA electric power generation, transmission, and distribution standards, including 29 CFR 1910.269
- Ability to determine nominal voltage, use insulated tools near energized parts, and distinguish exposed live parts
- Ability to perform tree and bucket rescue
- Ability to operate and service required tools and equipment
- Ability to read, write, and understand job instructions and safety information
- Ability to wear required PPE
- Ability to work long hours, overtime, weekends, holidays, storm work, and call-out work
- English reading, writing, and speaking required
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, lift up to 50 pounds frequently and exert up to 100 pounds occasionally
- Ability to work outdoors on rugged terrain and around electrical, mechanical, chemical, height, traffic, and weather hazards
