About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for critical care patients and families during inpatient intensive care and post-transfer or discharge
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, and pre-procedure evaluations
- Complete integrated assessments and clinical evaluations; document findings in medical records
- Order additional tests or consultations under critical care faculty collaboration or established guidelines and protocols
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate results within established guidelines and scope of practice
- Communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings
- Facilitate patient discharge or transfer by coordinating services and follow-up tests
- Develop individualized plans of care, including education, discharge/transfer planning, and referrals
- Identify unstable or complex situations and initiate appropriate interventions and emergency care
- Coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in ambulatory settings when applicable
- Serve as a resource and provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community
- Collaborate with medical and nursing staff, leaders, committees, and interdisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes
- Lead development and implementation of critical care practice changes
- Document care plans, interventions, evaluations, hours, and billing reports
- Review critical care, clinical, financial, length-of-stay, access-to-care, and cost-per-case data and recommend changes
- Participate in clinical trials, research studies, outcome measurement, program development, and education
- Respond to rapid response alerts by assessing and initiating care for critically ill patients
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Graduate from a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’s Degree in Nursing (Nurse Practitioner pathway)
- National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers
- Current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided or current multi-state Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC)
- Advanced Practice Registered Nurse License issued by West Virginia Board of Nursing
- American Heart Association BLS Certification required
- Bachelor’s Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant required (Physician Assistant pathway)
- Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant training program required
- Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants required
- Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine
- Eligible new graduates will be considered
- Acute care or critical care experience preferred
- ACNPs preferred; FNPs will be considered
- Master’s Degree as Physician Assistant preferred
- Proficiency with computers
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to perform heavy/hard work, including lifting, moving, positioning, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40+ pounds
- Ability to work protracted or irregular hours and around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment
