About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Design, develop, maintain and support Java-based backend services for data acquisition, processing, matching, analytics and integration
Build and maintain applications using Java RMI for communication between services
Explain and justify design decisions and choose appropriately between existing libraries and custom implementations
Write clean, maintainable and well-tested code to agreed engineering standards
Collaborate with QA to meet the Definition of Done
Investigate and resolve complex production issues and performance bottlenecks
Improve resilience, monitoring and operational reliability
Contribute to architecture discussions, design reviews and peer reviews
Mentor junior and mid-level developers
Help evolve the cloud-based data and analytics platform used by local authorities and public sector organisations across the UK

Requirements

What you’ll need

A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience
Strong commercial experience developing enterprise applications in Java
Excellent knowledge of Java 17+, Maven, and JUnit and automated testing approaches
Proven skill in performance optimisation and troubleshooting
Experience with CI/CD pipelines
Experience with source control workflows
Experience with Azure DevOps or similar lifecycle tooling
Strong grasp of software engineering principles, clean code and maintainable design
Sharp analytical and problem-solving skills
Clear communication and effective collaboration in multi-disciplinary teams
Proactive mindset, strong ownership and commitment to continuous improvement
Hands-on Java RMI experience is essential
Ability to work from the London office at least 1–2 days per week
Ability to travel for on-site client engagements as needed
