About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide direct care services as needed, including counseling, ADL training, personal care, medical, dietary, social, recreational, financial, habilitative, and other support
  • Ensure the health, safety, and wellness of the people supported
  • Support intimate care functions
  • Build and maintain positive relationships
  • Participate in developing treatment plans
  • Provide crisis intervention and management
  • Complete mandatory training and apply soft skills
  • Assist people with I/DD in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities through teaching, self-advocacy, and emotional support
  • Facilitate community integration, recreational activities, and socialization
  • Complete documentation for compliance and billing
  • Train and present to a team
  • Take on additional tasks and complete job-related duties as needed

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License required for most positions
  • Work or life experience in the I/DD field is a plus, but not mandatory for DSP 1 positions
  • For DSP 2 positions, at least 2 years’ work experience in the I/DD field
  • Good written and verbal communication
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Tuberculosis test and background check mandatory
  • Interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Willing to take initiative
  • Ability to support people with I/DD through patient and compassionate care
  • Must complete mandatory training as applicable, including AMAP, CPR/First Aid, SCIP-R, and Defensive Driving
  • Must meet, demonstrate, and model OPWDD Core Competencies
