About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Scale CNC from a single-replica service into a horizontally scalable fetch scheduler handling 50–100M requests per day
- Build and operate the Fleet Manager control plane with provider adapters, reconciler, rollout controller, inventory, health, configuration, software rollout, and BigQuery export capabilities
- Operate and improve the CONNECT proxy gateway and edge session handling
- Collaborate with the API squad on IP reputation, proxy leases, and request scheduling
- Engineer mTLS gRPC, long-polling and streaming over unreliable residential links, NAT/CGNAT behavior, and bandwidth accounting
- Define SLOs for Edge-route availability, success, and latency
- Build metrics for peer count, drop-off, and bandwidth
- Run safe blue/green rollouts of CNC and peers
- Participate in on-call rotation and lead incident post-mortems
- Write RFDs, review squad designs, and apply distributed-systems principles including consistency, backpressure, idempotency, and blast-radius control
- Collaborate with the Team Lead, Principal Engineer, and partner engineering squads
Requirements
What you’ll need- 5+ years of production Rust experience, shipping and operating services end to end
- Experience designing and running distributed schedulers, control planes, or stateful services at scale
- Ability to reason about consistency, partitions, backpressure, and idempotency
- Deep knowledge of TCP, TLS, HTTP, gRPC, long-lived connections, NAT, and lossy links
- Experience building or operating forward proxies, proxy gateways, or residential/ISP proxy infrastructure
- Understanding of IP reputation, session stickiness, and pool health
- Experience with SLOs, error budgets, observability, and production incident leadership
- Comfortable with on-call responsibilities
- Experience with Rust on Windows, Linux, and Android targets, including FFI boundaries
- Strong written communication for a globally distributed, remote-first environment
- Rust knowledge including Tokio and Tonic
- Familiarity with C++, Cronet, Python, and Java
- Experience with gRPC and Protocol Buffers over mTLS
- Experience with HTTP CONNECT proxying and Chromium networking
- Experience with GCP, Kubernetes, Terraform, and blue/green deployments
- Familiarity with Valkey, BigQuery, Confluent Kafka, Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, and OpenTelemetry
- Bonus: mobile or desktop Rust, fleet/device management, anti-bot and fingerprinting, web scraping/crawling, or open-source contributions
