About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Own the backend and infrastructure, including reliability, performance, monitoring, and incident response
Own security, including identity and access, multi-tenant data isolation, secrets, audit, and enterprise security reviews
Design and ship new platform capabilities
Maintain clean architecture as the platform grows
Lead and mentor engineers
Review designs and code and set engineering standards
Improve AI-first development practices using Claude Code and agents
Communicate technical trade-offs to founders, operations, finance, sales, and customers
Write clear plans and incident reports

Requirements

What you’ll need

Excellent written and spoken communication skills
Excellent English
Based in New Zealand with the right to work there
10+ years of senior backend experience building and running production systems
Strong infrastructure experience, ideally on GCP, including containers, managed Postgres, event-driven systems, Terraform, CI/CD, and observability
Security experience built into systems from the start
Hands-on experience developing with AI
Experience with Claude Code or similar AI development tools
Strong TypeScript and Node.js skills
Experience with GraphQL and relational data modelling
