About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Review project instructions and prints to determine test specifications, procedures, objectives, equipment, technical problems, and possible solutions
- Set up, assist with, and test units according to diagrams and instructions
- Investigate design proposals to improve equipment performance and collect data for development, standardization, and quality assurance
- Observe and record test and evaluation results
- Build prototypes and test equipment according to drawings
- Log and distribute test results to Engineering and file records
- Maintain safe practices and a professional work area
- Develop working knowledge of ANSI, UL, EC, and CSA standards
- Use and service laboratory test and prototype-development equipment
- Provide guidance and instruction to other laboratory technicians as needed
- Conduct test certification programs under the direction of a test agency representative
- Perform other assigned responsibilities
Requirements
What you’ll need- Associate's Degree in a related field with 2+ years of related experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a science-related field preferred
- Knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and test equipment
- Ability to work on small teams and independently
- Ability to perform routine mathematical calculations and chemical analysis
- Ability to recognize normal and abnormal conditions of test systems and filters
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working in a test lab environment
- Completion of at least one major project from start to finish
- Experience testing boilers, water heaters, pool heaters, or other gas appliances to ANSI standards
- Experience using and servicing most lab equipment
- Working knowledge of CSA tests and proper test data recording procedures
- Working knowledge of basic algebraic functions
- Ability to troubleshoot initial unit setup with limited supervision
- Ability to analyze problems, present solutions, and implement decisions
- Ability to recognize incorrect parameters indicating improper unit operation
- Understanding of required test data, collection methods, recording forms, and data significance
- Ability to develop skills in model making, sheet metal layout and fabrication, welding, machining, soldering, and metalworking
