  • Complete complex coverage analysis and identify all applicable policyholder benefits
  • Create additional sub-claims when needed
  • Investigate claim facts to determine payment limits, exclusions and recovery potential
  • Review damages and determine applicability of state law and other claim factors
  • Evaluate the financial value of losses
  • Approve payments for appropriate parties
  • Refer claims to Underwriting, Recovery Units or Claims Special Investigation Unit when necessary
  • Document and code claim files and complete claim closure activities in the claims management system
  • Negotiate claim resolutions
  • Handle homeowner/CAT claims valued over $100,000, unlivable insured properties and total losses
  • Investigate claims requiring extensive coverage analysis and assistance from experts, engineers or specialized vendors
  • Scope and prepare large restoration estimates using investigative and estimation tools
  • Review contractor estimates
  • Provide oversight of assigned claims, member communication, expert/resource coordination and restoration project schedules
  • Handle claims involving adverse third parties, litigation and alternative dispute resolution
  • Assist the Claim Manager with file reviews and training
  • Travel to territories throughout Michigan for field assignments and property inspections

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Complete ACG Claim Representative Training Program or demonstrate equivalent knowledge or experience
  • Eligible to acquire a State Adjuster’s license within 90 days of hire where required and maintain it as specified
  • Valid State Driver's License
  • Five years of experience or equivalent training in negotiation of claim settlements, securing and evaluating evidence, preparing manual and electronic estimates, subrogation claims, resolving coverage questions, taking statements, and establishing claim evaluation and resolution plans
  • Advanced knowledge of Essential Insurance Act (Michigan)
  • Advanced knowledge of Fair Trade Practices Act as it relates to claims
  • Advanced knowledge of subrogation procedures and processes
  • Advanced knowledge of intercompany arbitration
  • Knowledge of handling simple litigation
  • Advanced knowledge of building construction and repair techniques
  • Ability to handle claims to Claim Handling Standards and apply ACG Claim policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Ability to work within assigned ACG Claim systems including basic PC software
  • Ability to perform basic claim file review and investigations
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Customer service and relationship-building skills with insureds/claimants
  • Problem-solving, decision-making, prioritization, time management, organization and workload planning skills
  • Ability to process time-sensitive data and information from multiple sources
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle for field visits
  • Ability to research, analyze and interpret subrogation laws in various states
  • Ability to travel outside assigned territory, including overnight stays
  • Willingness to relocate and work evenings or weekends
  • Applicants must be residents of Michigan
  • Preferred: Associate degree in Business Administration, Insurance or related field, or equivalent related work experience
  • Preferred: Completion of Insurance Institute of America's General Insurance Program, associate degree in claims, associate degree in management or equivalent
  • Preferred: CPCU coursework or designation
  • Preferred: Xactware Training
  • Preferred: 5+ years of full-cycle homeowners claims handling experience
  • Preferred: Experience handling personal property and additional living expense claims
  • Preferred: Experience with internal water loss, fire and smoke claims
  • Preferred: Ability to walk on roofs, climb ladders and lift up to 25 pounds
  • Regular and reliable attendance is essential
  • Must consent to background and drug screening if offered employment
