About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Act as a resource to employees and students through training, orientation, day-to-day work direction, and guidance on complex issues
  • Assign, monitor, and review work progress, accuracy, productivity, and staffing levels
  • Assist with interviewing, employee selection, staff development, employee concerns, morale, and policy communication
  • Monitor and coordinate department workflow, including specimen collection, processing, and ordering
  • Handle telephone calls appropriately
  • Assist with inventory and maintain supplies and equipment
  • Investigate procedure and performance failures and aid in resolution
  • Review procedures, report discrepancies to leadership, and review pending and management reports
  • Generate and distribute reports
  • Document quality assurance and improvement information according to protocol
  • Verify positive patient identification for patient safety
  • Perform venipuncture and collect specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients
  • Assess patient reactions to specimen collection and obtain medical assistance when necessary
  • Obtain specimens according to priority and scheduled draw times
  • Receive, sort, package, and track specimens for transport
  • Ensure completion of specimen collection functions according to protocol
  • Label specimens properly and resolve identification, requisition, and order issues
  • Accept specimens from internal and external customers and respond to additional procurement requests
  • Perform limited CLIA testing according to policy and run quality control checks
  • Instruct students in phlebotomy, data entry, and specimen processing

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Typically requires 3 years of experience in phlebotomy or related laboratory function
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a group of employees
  • Basic computer skills, including experience using computer software applications
  • Keyboarding and typing skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good listening and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Demonstrated customer service skills to interface effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, and other healthcare employees
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including alternate site or shift assignments
  • Current driver's license granted by the state of residency, driving record meeting Aurora fleet safety standards, and proof of automobile liability insurance
  • Ability to provide care appropriate to newborn, pediatric, and adult patients
  • Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform the job
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally and up to 10 lbs. frequently
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and bend for the majority of the workday
  • Must wear appropriate lab coat, gloves, gowns, and eye and face protection as needed
