About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead and ensure accountability for development and implementation of system-wide translation and interpretation systems
  • Ensure services comply with state and federal regulations, accreditation and compliance requirements, and organizational policy
  • Participate in strategic planning for language services throughout the system
  • Lead quality monitoring and improvement initiatives for translation and interpretation services
  • Build relationships with management, employees and medical staff regarding services for LEP and deaf/hard-of-hearing patients
  • Design activities to improve, promote and publicize Translation and Interpretation Services
  • Develop capital and operating budgets with the director
  • Monitor budgets, analyze variances and take appropriate action
  • Manage employees and facilitate training and continuing education
  • Direct, support, select, train, develop and evaluate subordinate employees
  • Initiate personnel actions in accordance with departmental policies
  • Participate in safety initiatives and risk mitigation
  • Coach staff on performance, complete performance reviews and support staff morale

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Leadership experience required
  • Typically requires 5 years of experience in a medical environment performing medical verbal and written interpretation and translation, leading and prioritizing staff work, and acting as a resource to staff on complex cases
  • Includes 1 year of supervisory experience in a medical environment
  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent knowledge) in Health Care Administration OR Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (or equivalent knowledge)
  • Professional command of bilingual medical terminology, including anatomy and physiology, diagnostic process, treatment, prevention and health education models
  • Knowledge of the ethics of medical interpreting as outlined by the National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare (NCIHC)
  • Ability to oversee interpreters handling difficult messages including death and dying
  • Excellent human relations and communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to utilize video interpreting techniques
  • Ability to travel
  • Must wear protective clothing when necessary
  • Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform the job
