About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide coverage at three separate Chicago locations based on business needs
- Verify positive patient identification and assess patient reactions to specimen procurement
- Perform venipuncture and collect specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients
- Obtain specimens according to priority and scheduled draw times
- Label specimens properly and resolve identification or requisition problems
- Perform limited testing under CLIA 1988 guidelines
- Answer and screen telephone calls
- Assist with inventory, supplies, equipment, billing, and other business functions
- Accept, receive, sort, package, track, and process specimens for testing
- Perform aliquoting, pre-analytical steps, and instrument loading while maintaining specimen identification
- Respond to additional specimen procurement requests
- Order and verify test requests
- Document quality assurance and improvement information
- Run quality control checks and notify providers of stat, critical, and abnormal results
- Enter laboratory results into the computer system
- Perform internal and external proficiency testing
- Review pending and management reports and generate and distribute reports
- Instruct employees and students in phlebotomy, data entry, and specimen processing
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1 year phlebotomy experience, preferred
- Knowledge and experience in phlebotomy or related laboratory function
- Basic computer skills and experience using computer software applications
- Keyboarding and typing skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Good listening skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Demonstrated customer service skills
- Ability to provide age-appropriate care to newborn, pediatric, and adult patients
- Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform the job
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, and bend for the majority of the workday
- Ability to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner
- Must wear appropriate lab coat, gloves, gowns, and eye and face protection as needed
- Must be able to work Monday–Friday with rotational Saturdays
- Must be able to work varying start times between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM and 8.5-hour shifts
