About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Organize and prepare exam rooms and work areas by cleaning, stocking, ordering supplies, checking equipment, and putting away equipment
  • Prepare patients for examinations and assist physicians
  • Obtain and record ocular and medical histories, medications, and chief complaints
  • Document and communicate accurate and timely information regarding patient conditions
  • Perform basic diagnostic tests and visual screenings, including visual field/acuity, tonometry, glaucoma pressures, applanations, topography, color vision testing, lensometry, blood pressure, pupil testing, scribing, and corneal measurement using a keratometer
  • Assist patients with ordering and dispensing glasses and contact lenses
  • Maintain and calibrate equipment
  • Sterilize instruments using appropriate techniques and procedures
  • Assist with scheduling post-operative, surgery, and specialist appointments
  • May assist ophthalmologists with basic or routine surgical procedures and post-operative care or treatment
  • Provide age-appropriate patient care based on assessment of patient status and developmental needs
  • Perform other related duties as required

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Graduate
  • Experienced Optometric Ophthalmic Technician
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products, electronic mail, and electronic medical records systems
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders frequently throughout the workday
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. without assistance
  • Functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch
  • Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform the job
  • Ability to work in environments involving mechanical, radiation, electrical, and chemical hazards, as well as blood and body fluids, while wearing protective clothing or equipment as necessary
