About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Create the initial electronic health record and prevent duplicate medical records
- Positively identify patients before care and comply with accrediting-body requirements
- Check in and register patients
- Obtain and verify demographic, guarantor, and insurance information
- Discuss and collect co-pays and other out-of-pocket responsibilities
- Maintain confidentiality of patient, financial, and medical-record information in accordance with HIPAA
- Recognize commercial and government insurance plans and explain financial responsibilities
- Refer patients to Financial Advocates when appropriate
- Enforce required rules, forms, questions, and signatures for regulatory compliance, including HIPAA, EMTALA, Consent for Treatment, patient rights, IMM, MOON, MSPQ, ABN, and Notice of Privacy Practices
- Schedule appointments and coordinate cancellations, reschedules, wait lists, and recalls
- Provide test-preparation, arrival-time, medication, check-in, and facility-direction information
- Perform visit closure, schedule follow-ups, and provide after-visit summaries
- Educate and support patients with the patient portal/app
- Greet patients and visitors, answer telephones, screen calls, and take messages
- Provide customer service and assistance such as transportation, directions, wheelchairs, and interpreter services
- Scan documents to Health Information Management, manage faxes and electronic health-record inbox messages, and follow clinical-team direction for emergent needs
- Monitor and work assigned electronic health-record work queues
- Communicate customer-service and process-improvement issues to management
- Assist department leadership with orientation and training
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School Diploma or GED
- Demonstrate the Advocate Health purpose, values and behaviors
- Ability to work independently in a high-profile, high-stress area and meet deadlines
- Ability to multitask, prioritize work, and manage high-volume workloads with interruptions
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Excellent customer service and service recovery skills
- Independent thinking and problem-solving skills; ability to triage issues and concerns
- Excellent written, verbal, customer service, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to educate patients about insurance coverage and unpaid or potentially unpaid services
- Ability to interact with physicians and staff to resolve patient-care issues
- Ability to collect and manage payments, including cash, and follow cash-handling security procedures
- Strong understanding of computer systems and proficient typing skills
- Technical proficiency with email, Microsoft Office, internet browsers, and phone technology
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information according to internal policies
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to act as a resource to other teammates
- Ability to transition frequently between sitting and standing; stand and sit for extended periods and remain mobile throughout the workday
- Ability to frequently lift up to 10 lbs. and occasionally lift 20 lbs. or more
- Ability to push/pull up to 50 lbs. with assistance
- Vision, hearing, touch, clear speech, and fine motor keyboard data-entry abilities
- Willingness and ability to travel as required and work in varying weather and road conditions
