About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Greet patients arriving for appointments
- Monitor patient flow to ensure efficient and courteous care
- Complete and maintain accurate patient demographic and insurance information
- Complete registration for walk-in patients and update information as needed
- Verify insurance benefits
- Obtain, calculate and collect out-of-pocket financial liabilities, past-due balances and estimates
- Follow Financial Clearance policy for non-urgent patient services
- Obtain pre-certification or authorization when required
- Identify patients needing financial assistance and refer them to Financial Counselors
- Perform visit closure, including checking out patients and scheduling follow-up appointments
- Provide patients with appropriate documents
- Maintain knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, third-party payer requirements, insurance guidelines and accepted insurance plans
- Communicate customer service issues and process improvement opportunities to management
- Meet department productivity requirements and a 98% accuracy expectation
- Maintain positive relations with patients, families and clinical staff
- Collaborate with others to ensure concise and timely information flow
- Report to a Supervisor or Manager
- Operate equipment necessary to perform the job
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma or GED required
- Patient access (scheduling, registration and financial clearance), insurance verification, billing or certified medical assistant experience preferred
- Ability to identify and understand issues and problems
- Ability to examine data and draw logical conclusions
- Knowledge of Medicare, HIPAA, and EMTALA rules and regulations
- Knowledge of insurance pre-certification requirements
- Mathematical aptitude
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Critical thinking skills
- Understanding of basic human anatomy, medical terminology and procedures
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information according to internal policies
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and ADT software
- Ability to write routine correspondence and calculate figures, discounts and percentages
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and solve problems in a high-profile, high-stress area
- Ability to determine work priorities and interact positively with internal and external customers
- Ability to sit for the majority of the workday
- Occasionally lift up to 10 lbs.
