About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Create the initial electronic health record and prevent duplicate medical records
- Check in and register patients
- Obtain and verify demographic, guarantor, and insurance information
- Discuss and collect co-pays and other out-of-pocket patient responsibilities
- Maintain confidentiality of patient personal, financial, and medical information in accordance with HIPAA
- Recognize commercial and government insurance plans and explain financial responsibilities
- Refer patients to Financial Advocates when appropriate
- Enforce required rules, forms, and questions for compliance with HIPAA, EMTALA, consent, patient rights, Medicare, and other regulations
- Obtain patient or guarantor signatures as required
- Schedule appointments, cancellations, reschedules, wait-list requests, and recall requests
- Provide information about test preparation, arrival times, medication and food guidelines, check-in procedures, and directions
- Perform visit closure, check out patients, schedule follow-up appointments, and provide after-visit summaries
- Educate and support patients with the patient portal/app
- Greet patients and visitors and respond to routine information requests
- Answer and screen telephone calls and take messages
- Maintain positive relations with patients, families, clinical staff, and visitors
- Communicate customer-service issues and process-improvement opportunities to management
- Arrange transportation, provide directions, locate wheelchairs, and coordinate interpreter services
- E-scan documents to Health Information Management, address faxes and electronic health-record inbox messages, and follow clinical-team direction for emergent needs
- Monitor and work assigned electronic health-record work queues
- Assist department leadership with orientation and training
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School Diploma or GED
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, set and meet deadlines, multitask, and prioritize work
- Ability to manage high-volume workloads with many interruptions in a fast-paced environment without direct supervision
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Excellent customer service and service recovery skills
- Demonstrated independent thinking and problem-solving skills, with ability to exercise judgment to triage issues and concerns
- Excellent written and verbal communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to educate patients on insurance coverage and manage discussions about services that may not be paid by their health plan
- Ability to interact with physicians and staff to resolve patient-care issues
- Ability to collect and manage payments, including cash, and follow cash-handling security procedures
- Strong understanding of computer systems and proficient typing skills
- Technical proficiency with email, Microsoft Office, internet browsers, and phone technology
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information according to internal policies
- Excellent organizational skills
- Demonstrated ability to act as a resource to teammates
- Ability to stand and sit for extended periods, transition frequently between sitting and standing, and remain physically mobile throughout the workday
- Ability to frequently lift up to 10 lbs. and occasionally lift 20 lbs. or more
- Ability to push/pull up to 50 lbs. with assistance
- Vision, hearing, touch, clear speech, and fine motor keyboard data-entry abilities
