About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Verify positive patient identification and assess patient reactions to specimen procurement
  • Perform venipuncture and collect specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients
  • Obtain specimens according to priority and scheduled draw times
  • Label specimens properly and resolve specimen identification or requisition problems
  • Perform limited testing under CLIA 1988 guidelines
  • Answer and screen telephone calls
  • Assist with inventory and maintain supplies and equipment
  • Support billing and other business functions
  • Accept, receive, sort, package, and track specimens for transport
  • Process specimens for testing, including aliquoting, pre-analytical steps, and loading instruments
  • Respond to specimen procurement requests
  • Order and verify test requests
  • Document quality assurance/improvement information and run quality control checks
  • Notify providers of stat, critical, and other abnormal results according to policy
  • Enter laboratory results in the computer system
  • Perform and review proficiency testing and pending or management reports
  • Generate and distribute reports
  • Instruct employees and students in phlebotomy, data entry, and specimen processing
  • Provide site coverage across Park Ridge, Chicago, Buffalo Grove, Hoffman Estates, and Lake Zurich

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 1 year phlebotomy experience, preferred
  • Knowledge and experience in phlebotomy or related laboratory function
  • Basic computer skills, including experience using computer software applications
  • Keyboarding and typing skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good listening skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Demonstrated customer service skills
  • Ability to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served
  • Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform the job
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and bend for the majority of the workday
  • Ability to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner
  • Must wear appropriate lab coat, gloves, gowns, and eye and face protection as needed
  • Ability to work rotating Saturdays; no Sundays
